Description
A responsible role for an environmental professional who wants to contribute to a safe and sustainable living environment in the Groningen region. You will work for the waste and industrial sectors and ensure that environmentally harmful activities of companies comply with applicable laws and regulations. The position requires substantive environmental knowledge, oversight, and administrative sensitivity, and requires the ability to switch between substantive assessment, management, and administrative coordination.
Job requirements
- Completed higher professional education, preferably in Environmental Science, Process Technology, Chemical Technology or similar.
- Relevant knowledge of waste materials and/or the process industry.
- Current knowledge of environmental legislation and regulations and developments surrounding the Environment Act.
- Experience with permitting, environmental consulting or a similar role is an advantage.
- Analytical and careful, able to separate the main issues from secondary ones.
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Politically and administratively sensitive and systematic, independent and collaborative.
Tasks
- Responsible for the entire permitting process: from assessing applications to making decisions.
- Assessing the admissibility of notifications and (multiple) applications for the environmental part of environmental permits.
- Advising on and drafting decisions regarding the granting, refusal or withdrawal of environmental permits.
- Processing of notifications based on the Environmental Activities Decree (Bal) and the Environmental Plan.
- Drafting tailor-made regulations and approval decisions based on measurement data, calculations and risk analyses.
- Involve environmental specialists and lawyers in a timely manner and assess their contributions for relevance and applicability.
- Coordinating legal procedures and monitoring planning and progress.
- Maintaining contacts with companies, chain partners and other government organisations.

Description of the organisation
The Groningen Environmental Service is committed to a clean, safe, and healthy living environment in the province of Groningen. Commissioned by the Groningen municipalities and the province, the service carries out tasks related to permitting, supervision, enforcement, and specialized environmental advice.
The organisation operates in a dynamic environment where issues such as nitrogen, energy, air quality, noise, substances of very high concern, and the Environment Act are central. With over 250 professionals, the Groningen Environmental Service works daily on complex social and environmental issues, taking all stakeholders into account.
