Description
Professor by Special Appointment in Business Ethics and Ecological Sustainability from a Humanist Perspective. The chair focuses on research and education regarding ethics and sustainability, with an emphasis on societal relevance and transdisciplinarity, in collaboration between the University of Groningen and the Socrates Foundation.
Tasks
General professorial duties in the field of teaching and research focused on business ethics and ecological sustainability.
- Education: developing and providing education on business ethics and ecological sustainability from a humanist perspective, with an emphasis on transdisciplinarity and innovation.
- Concrete education: offering an elective course for Master's students, accessible to students from various faculties and external interested parties, including students with diverse backgrounds.
- Research: conducting research that aligns with major societal challenges, with a focus on the role of businesses and ecological sustainability.
- Possible research themes: corporate liability and responsibility for ecological sustainability; the role of stakeholders such as shareholders and consumers; ethical aspects of sustainable business; ecological justice; human rights in relation to climate and biodiversity; and finance linked to sustainability.
- Impact: actively contributing to the public discussion on the responsibility of companies regarding sustainability issues and the pursuit of social impact.
- Collaboration and networking: playing a key role within the Faculties of Philosophy (Department of Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy) and Economics & Business (Section Business Ethics & Corporate Sustainability), and participation in the interfaculty Centre for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
Working conditions
Five-year appointment for 0,2 FTE (8 hours per week). Reappointment is possible following evaluation. The position is unpaid; the Socrates Foundation provides an annual expense allowance to support the commitment.
The stated employment conditions, such as 232 leave hours per year (based on a 38-hour work week), the option to exchange hours for time off, an 8,3% year-end bonus and 8% holiday allowance, and extensive opportunities for personal and professional development, serve as general information but do not apply to unpaid employees.

Description of the organization
The University of Groningen (RUG) is a university with interdisciplinary research and education, and an emphasis on knowledge sharing and participation with businesses, government institutions, and societal partners.

The Faculty of Philosophy is a small-scale faculty within the University of Groningen (RUG) with approximately 90 staff members and 480 students. The faculty has short lines of communication, an informal culture, and works extensively in interdisciplinary collaborations. Its teaching and research are highly regarded nationally and internationally.
The faculty is organized into three departments: Theoretical Philosophy, History of Philosophy, and Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy. Research collaboration for the chair takes place within the Centre for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
The Socrates Foundation promotes the exchange of ideas on fundamental social and cultural issues from a modern humanist perspective, among other things by establishing humanist endowed chairs at Dutch universities.
