BSc/MSc internship at Wetsus focused on electrospun nanofibers for bipolar membranes.

Activities: electrospinning, characterization and electrochemical testing of membranes.

Required: enrolled BSc or MSc student in a relevant technical or chemical field.

Description

BSc/MSc internship focused on electrospun polymer nanofibers for sustainable bipolar membranes operating at high current densities. The internship contributes to the development of a next-generation bipolar membrane and focuses on understanding how the electrospinning process influences the structure and performance of the membrane.

Job requirements

  • Enrolled BSc or MSc student in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, environmental technology, or a related field.
  • Interest in sustainable energy technologies and electrochemical systems.
  • Experience with polymer chemistry, membrane technology, or electrochemistry is a plus.
  • Experience in laboratory work, good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in data analysis; programming experience is a plus.
  • EU citizen or non-EU citizen who is already enrolled at a Dutch university.

Tasks

  • Preparation of polymer solutions and production of nanofibers using an electrospinning setup.
  • Investigate how spin parameters influence fiber morphology and membrane structure.
  • Visualizing the nanofiber structure with electron microscopy (SEM-EDX).
  • Characterizing the mechanical and thermal properties (e.g. DSC, TGA).
  • Assessing the electrochemical performance of the developed membranes.
  • Testing of the membranes in an electrochemical setup related to hydrogen production.

Working conditions

  • Duration: 4–6 months.
  • Start date: May/June 2026, negotiable.
  • Location: Wetsus, Leeuwarden (Netherlands).
  • Allowance: maximum €425 per month; students with a grant of less than €425 per month can apply for a top-up up to the maximum amount.

Description of the organisation
