Description

This EngD position participates in the CO2RE project to study impurity reactions and corrosion in CO2 streams. The research objective is to generate and evaluate data on impurity interactions and corrosion to inform acceptance criteria for CO2 quality specifications in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. The EngD program combines specialized coursework at the University of Groningen with a design project conducted in collaboration with NV Nederlandse Gasunie and the University of Groningen.

Job requirements

  • Masters degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline, with excellent marks.
  • High command of Dutch (minimum B2) and strong English language skills, both spoken and written; applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency.
  • Good understanding of oxidation and corrosion reactions and of the physical behavior of gases, particularly CO2.
  • Affinity for chemical interactions on metal surfaces and understanding of industrial chemical analysis methods.
  • Knowledge of carbon capture and storage (CCS) concepts.
  • Advanced technical, analytical, and practical design skills.
  • Ability to work in an international research and engineering environment and to collaborate professionally with colleagues at different organizational levels.
  • Team player with strong communication skills, a proactive problem-solving attitude, and the ability to work with responsible autonomy on the EngD project.

Tasks

  • Participate in the CO2RE project and related research activities.
  • Process, evaluate, and generate experimental and/or analytical data on impurity reactions and corrosion in CO2 streams.
  • Investigate kinetics of impurity interactions and corrosion caused by acid formation and liquid dropout across gas, dense, and liquid phases under varying process conditions and impurity levels.
  • Provide results that serve as input for defining CO2 quality acceptance criteria in CCS projects.
  • Carry out a design project at Gasunie and the University of Groningen as part of the EngD programme.
  • Perform experiments and collaborative work at the University of Groningen (Zernike Campus), the Gasunie office in Groningen, and the DNV Technology Center in Groningen as required by the project.

Working conditions

  • Position duration: two years.
  • Employment under the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities.
  • End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and a holiday allowance of 8%.
  • Flexible working-time arrangement allowing you to work more or fewer hours in exchange for correspondingly more or fewer free hours.

Description of the organization

The University of Groningen (UG) is a European research university that values interdisciplinary research, teaching, and collaboration with industry, government, and societal organizations. The Faculty of Science and Engineering provides education and research across disciplines such as physics, biology, artificial intelligence, mechanical engineering, and pharmacy, and emphasizes collaboration on societal challenges like energy and sustainability.

The Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen (ENTEG), part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, offers a fully funded two-year EngD position leading to an Engineering Doctorate degree. The EngD program includes specialized coursework and a design project carried out in partnership with industry.

Gasunie is an energy network company responsible for large-scale transport and storage infrastructure for natural gas, and is developing infrastructure for heat, hydrogen, and CO2 transport. Gasunie CCS contributes to CCS projects in the Netherlands, including Porthos, Aramis, and the Delta Rhine Corridor.

The CO2RE project, initiated by Gasunie CCS and executed by DNV, is an R&D effort to assess kinetics of impurity interactions in CO2 streams and corrosion due to acid formation and liquid dropout, covering multiple phases and process conditions.
