Description

Two-year postdoctoral researcher position in polymer synthesis at the University of Groningen within the Horizon Europe Pathfinder project SUSHI-PACK, hosted in the smart and sustainable polymeric product group under the supervision of Prof. Patrizio Raffa. The role focuses on the design, synthesis and characterization of bio-based polymers and polymer networks derived from regenerated waste oils and seaweed-based feedstocks for smart packaging applications. The group is part of the chemical product technology research unit within the ENTEG Institute.

Job requirements

  • PhD in Polymer Science, Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in polymer and/or organic synthesis.
  • Experience with standard polymer characterization techniques such as NMR, GPC, DSC and TGA.
  • Previous experience with polycondensation chemistry is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and confidently in a polymer chemistry laboratory.
  • Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, creativity and initiative.
  • Excellent written and spoken English (proof of proficiency may be requested).
  • Curious mindset with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and enjoyment of collaborative international research environments.

Tasks

  • Design, synthesize and characterize bio-based polymers and polymer networks for smart packaging applications.
  • Develop materials derived from regenerated waste oils and seaweed-based feedstocks.
  • Conduct cutting-edge research and contribute to development of high-performance sustainable packaging solutions.
  • Collaborate within an international, multidisciplinary consortium.
  • Supervise MSc students.
  • Publish results in leading journals and present findings at international conferences.
  • Contribute to shaping the scientific direction of the project.
