How virtual reality helps young people truly understand climate change
PhD candidate Marit Boekema is investigating how things can be done differently. In her doctoral research, she examines how virtual reality can contribute to climate citizenship in secondary education. She wants to help students learn to understand the perspective of other people and reflect on their own role in a changing world. 'At its core, my research is about sustainability didactics,' says Boekema. 'The central question is how we can teach young people the perspective of people who are confronted with climate change on a daily basis worldwide. Climate affects people, animals, and ecosystems globally, but the consequences are not distributed fairly.' In her research, Boekema uses virtual reality. Students put on VR headsets and are taken to vulnerable areas, such as small islands facing rising sea levels. They see how people there live, reside, and cope with changes in their environment. For Boekema, her research already has value. 'I am in close contact with schools and teachers who really want to get started with this. If this research provides them with practical tools and gets young people thinking, then it is worthwhile.' 'Ultimately, it is about working together on a world that remains livable.' If this research contributes to awareness, conversations, and small changes, that is enormously valuable.
