Sustainable plastics technology

Biobased materials and recycling play an increasingly important role in the plastics industry. NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences and Drenthe College are responding to this with the Sustainable Plastics Technology course. This is a unique collaboration between vocational (MBO) and higher professional education (HBO). Upon completion, you will have extensive knowledge of producing biobased and recycled plastics and will be able to monitor quality. You will also earn a certificate that the industry demands.

Description

Content of the training

In this course, you'll learn the basics of polymer chemistry and polymer technology. Then, we'll delve deeper into biopolymers and biodegradable polymers. The same applies to composites; here too, you'll learn about composites in general and then biocomposites specifically. Basic processing techniques such as injection molding and extrusion are covered both theoretically and practically. Finally, we'll discuss mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, and impact resistance.

Form of the training (program)

The course consists of 8 half days and ends with an exam on the eighth day.

Day 1: Introduction to polymer chemistry, polymer technology and composites:

  • Classification of polymers
  • Thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers
  • Thermal properties (glass transition temperature, crystallization, etc.)
  • Composites (plastic-fiber combinations)
  • Processing techniques

Day 2: The different types, processing and applications of bio-composites by the lectorate.

Day 3: With the knowledge gained on day 2, a number of products based on bio-composites are being made in the laboratories.

Day 4: The products of day 3 are tested for mechanical properties.

Day 5: Theoretical aspects and practical training regarding injection moulding.

Day 6: Other processing techniques, such as extrusion, will be discussed. This will take place during a full day in the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences laboratory, with guidance from lecturers from the research group.

Day 7: Circular economy and recycling of plastics (mechanical and chemical) by Mr Folkersma, professor of Sustainable Polymers.

Day 8: Examination

This course covers topics such as basic software skills, designing a flip chart, becoming aware of and discovering new teaching possibilities, creating new lesson plans with the Active Board, and discussing each other's flip charts. In addition to general case studies, you can use your own teaching materials as case studies for this training.
