Content of the training

Innovation is essential to strengthen the position of shipping in the Netherlands and respond effectively to (inter)national developments. The maritime sector therefore demands experts who can handle complex projects using a multidisciplinary approach. The two-year, part-time master's program in Maritime Innovations will train you to become a maritime innovator, maximizing the knowledge you've acquired (and are acquiring) on ​​the job. That's why Maritime Innovations:

  • The Netherlands' premier maritime part-time master's program: the only (funded) operational maritime part-time master's program, offering the perfect solution for those who want to develop further and continue working.
  • On-site contact days and distance learning: The study start week is on Terschelling, while other contact days (four in-person contact days per year) are at various locations, with the main location being Terschelling. For the rest of the program, you will study from home or your workplace.
  • Practice-oriented research, innovation, and sustainability are central: the program focuses primarily on innovation in practice. Work on assignments that relate to your practical context or that you can apply within your organization.
  • Part of the Willem Barentsz Maritime Institute (MIWB), one of the best maritime institutes in the Netherlands.

Form of the training (program)

Within the program, you can create your own study program based on your interests and background. There are nautical, technical, and design-oriented modules. You don't have to choose just one orientation; a mix is ​​often possible.

A number of core modules are compulsory:

  • Innovative design
  • Maritime Innovation

These modules focus on general training competencies. Several modules also have a theme to which the module assignments are linked. These themes include: 'Energy transition,' 'Human factors engineering,' data-driven optimization, asset management, wind-assisted sailing, and advanced energy management. 

In addition to the compulsory modules, the program allows for three specialization modules. You can design these elective modules yourself in consultation with your mentor. You can create your own package, as long as you take no more than three courses. You can tailor this program entirely to your own preferences.

Practical information

It's important that you can apply your study assignments to your own professional situation, so you can see potential innovations within your field. Finally, you must have a university-level command of English. A maximum of 20 students are admitted per academic year through an intake procedure.
