Description

One-year postdoctoral position (0,8 FTE) in contemplative science at the Bernoulli Institute of the University of Groningen. The position is situated within the cognitive modeling group and funded by the Consciousness Foundation grant of Marieke van Vugt, focusing on research into the neural correlates of resolving boundaries between self and others.

Job requirements

  • PhD in cognitive neuroscience or psychology.
  • Knowledge and experience with EEG data collection.
  • Knowledge and experience with EEG analysis.
  • Experience with contemplative inquiry.
  • Preferably some experience with Tibetan Buddhist traditions or Tibetan culture.
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.
  • For this project, an understanding of psychological and neuroscientific methods is more important than extensive computational methods.

Tasks

  • Developing an experimental protocol rooted in the epistemological framework of the Tibetan monks with whom we collaborate.
  • Collection of EEG data during meditative states, including at least one research trip to India to conduct the EEG study.
  • Analyzing EEG data using state-of-the-art analytical methods and writing publications.
  • Scientific interaction with research staff and students and participation in seminars.
  • Coordinating and aligning research methods with colleagues from other projects funded by the Consciousness Foundation.

Working conditions

  • Offer in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Position of 0,8 FTE (80% of full-time) and the position is limited to a period of one year.
  • Holiday and year-end arrangements in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement, including a holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of approximately 8,3%.

  • Flexibility in working hours is possible, with the option to adjust hours in exchange for more or fewer leave hours.
  • Start date flexible, no earlier than 1 November 2026.
