Postdoctoral researcher (0.8 FTE, total duration 25 months) within the Center for Groningen Language and Culture, embedded in the GroNLP group and Speech Lab Groningen. The position focuses on investigating how low-resource speech technology can be developed and improved for Dutch Low Saxon varieties, and on exploring how recent language and speech technology advances can be applied or adapted for these varieties. The implemented technology may be made publicly available and used in the MOI Grunnen | Drenthe project.
Functie eisen
- PhD (granted or near completion) in Speech and/or Language Technology, Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field.
- Several impactful publications in journals and major conferences demonstrating research skills in the relevant field.
- Demonstrable strong technical profile sufficient to conduct the listed research tasks.
- Experience in applying or developing speech technology, with demonstrable skills in evaluating and improving such systems.
- Experience with, or willingness to learn, implementing language technology in user-accessible ways (for example via a website or online application).
- Motivation to seek external research funding.
- Motivation to collaborate with PhD students and other researchers on low-resource speech and language technology.
- Proficiency in English sufficient for writing academic articles and presenting work.
- Motivation to learn, or existing ability to speak, the regional language is considered a plus.
Taken
- Conduct independent, high-quality research on improving speech technology for low-resource varieties, primarily Dutch Low Saxon.
- Publish research results in top conferences and journals in the field.
- Develop, evaluate and improve automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) systems for target varieties.
- Help supervise and collaborate with PhD students and a postdoctoral researcher working on speech and language technology for low-resource languages.
- Collect, organize and curate acoustic and textual data for the target varieties, using methods such as custom online interfaces or the mobile SPRAAKLAB.
- Make developed technology publicly available and support its integration with related projects, such as MOI Grunnen | Drenthe.
- Prepare and (co-)write external research funding applications to strengthen the project and personal research development.
- Participate in weekly GroNLP meetings and bi-weekly Speech Lab Groningen meetings.
- Potentially help supervise BA and MA theses on related topics.
- Support public engagement activities aimed at the Low Saxon area.
Werkomstandigheden
- Temporary appointment at 0.8 FTE: initially nine months, extendable to a total of 25 months subject to a positive evaluation.
- Non-negotiable starting date: 1 December 2026; contract end date: 31 December 2028.

Beschrijving van de organisatie
The position is at the University of Groningen, an interdisciplinary research university that values collaboration with businesses, government institutions, and societal organisations, and aims for an inclusive, safe working climate.
The successful candidate will be embedded in the Center for Groningen Language and Culture, within the broader GroNLP research group, and will be a member of Speech Lab Groningen.
- The Faculty hosts diverse academic programmes and conducts research across multiple fields, with a strong international orientation.
- Available facilities include an internal server with two A100 40GB GPUs and access to an NVIDIA Grace Hopper system with an H100 GPU, a Temi robot, and the mobile SPRAAKLAB.
- Research supervision will be provided by Prof. dr. Martijn Wieling and Prof. dr. Malvina Nissim.
